A Few of Our Favorite Things

Sixth graders wrote parodies of "My Favorite Things" from the Sound of Music.  After a discussion on rhythm, syllables and meter students were turned loose.  Here are a couple of great ones!

My Favorite Things
by C.B.
Winning at ball games and riding my horses
Encouraging my team and going through courses
Pretty blue jerseys and all sporty bling
These are a few of my favorite things!

Snowflakes on glasses and friends at my house
Old faded blue jeans and a little white blouse
Sparkly eye shadown and shiny diamond rings
These are a few of my favorite things!

Cheese on my French fries and cheese on my pizza
No spending limit when I take mom's Visa
Going to parties and other fun things
These are a few of my favorite things!

My Favorite Things
by E.S.
Chili cheese french fries and talking till bedtime
bright colored candies and mountains that I climb
Juicy chicken made into hot wings
These are a few of my favorite things!

Sprinkles on donuts and cream in my coffee
Caramelized sugar that cools into toffee
Rich portly people all covered in bling
These are a few of my favorite things!

Staying up late just to eat junk food
Calling everyone that I meet "dude"
Pretty pink flip flops I wear in the spring
These are a few of my favorite things!

My Favorite Things
by Mrs. King
Icing on donuts and ketchup on French fries
Singing and laughing and frost during sunrise
Signing my cards with the name "We Three Kings"
These are a few of my favorite things!

Cheese on my burgers, snow days in September
Funny, hip websites that make me a member
White meat on chicken, except for the wings
These are a few of my favorite things!

Facebook and iPhones and sleeping for hours
Swimming and shopping and taking hot showers
Words that are rhyming and children that sing
These are a few of my favorite things!

When the bell rings!
When the cat screams!
When I'm feeling sad!
I simply remember my favorite things
and then I don't feel so bad!

I love having students write parodies.  Often we'll choose educational topics, but this was such a fun activity that I think we'll do it again!  I gave them a copy of the lyrics so that they could compare syllables and rhythm.  We did a rough draft one day and then next class period finished or edited them and made a final copy.  Fun!
